Once upon a time (and still today) many readers "lazy", for which willing publishers made "selections" of famous literary works, to avoid eye strain and especially at the synapses of affluent subscribers…There are still these "summaries", defined now "spirits"…But the original literary work has never received full justice for those transactions?
So it seems to the reader that you love the masterpiece uncut, as well as the bread. In short, in the view of this writer has always been and still is an arbitrary operation with regard to the result, both from the point of view of "reducer" that of the reader.
