IL TROVATORE at the Regio di Parma-Festival Verdi 2023-Review

by William Fratti – The show of Davide Livermore he was able to make us forget every negative perspective. Overwhelming, intriguing, but above all different.

October 1, 2023. The programming of yet another Trovatore immediately the year following the Fidentino one - as well as yet another Nabucco after so many years of tolerating Nabucchi and Masquerade Balls – didn't bode well, but the spectacle of Davide Livermore he was able to make us forget every negative perspective. Overwhelming, intriguing, but above all different, this Trovatore it is excellently constructed, starting from the entire system - the scenes are excellent Giò Forma, the videos of D-Work, the lights of Antonio Castro – right down to the individual gestures and movements of all the actors: soloists, choir and the talented mimes. The costumes are also very accurate Anna Verde.

Personal success for Francesco Ivan Ciampa, leading the excellent Orchestra of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, which strives in a particularly intense and richly accented direction, very attentive to Verdi's dynamism and drama.

Very good for Manrico di Riccardo Massi, tenor with a beautiful voice with a typically Italian timbre, soft and persuasive. His performance is definitely better than the previous one Adriana Lecouvreur, but the projection of the high notes which seem to remain stuck at the level of the ramus of the mandible still needs to be improved.

Leonora di is very good and very precise Francesca Dotto, which brings to the stage a very successful character, but above all gives the audience a true bel canto interpretation, elegant and refined.

Another personal success for Clémentine Margaine, who knows how to achieve the effect. His Azucena is exciting, compelling, pulsating, despite lacking homogeneity between registers and perhaps performing a little too many unclean sounds.

Insufficient evidence for the Count of Giovanni Meoni, scheduled for the last performance, here replacing Franco Vassallo. The high notes struggle to rise and the colors are almost absent.

Roberto Tagliavini he is instead one of the best Ferrandos we have had the pleasure of witnessing and manages to elevate his role to the rank of protagonist.
Very good also for Ines Carmela Lopez, the Ruiz of Didier Pieri and for the Choir of the Teatro Comunale of Bologna led by Gea Towards Ansini.
